The Basics of Glycemic Load Health News For Families

Although there is a huge amount of benefits when following the glycemic index, it can sometimes be confusing. The average person may be confused about how it relates to them and they may find it hard to work it into their diet.

Additionally, the glycemic index rating of some foods rely so heavily on the way the food is prepared and the method it was made. Every persons biological composition, the amount eaten and the other food it is eaten with factor in as well.

Others are confounded by the differing opinions regarding the glycemic index, as certain medical specialists opined that this index uses an unrealistic amount of food as its basis making the results completely different from how real people eat. They point out that the glycemic index minimizes the glycemic response with high carbs and exaggerates that of low-carbs.

In response to this, doctors have introduced the concept of glycemic load. This new concept takes into consideration the amount of available carbohydrates in a particular food. These doctors say that the available carbohydrates give us energy.

Because it also takes into account the amount of food and the way food is combined, it is being suggested as an alternative to the simplistic glycemic index.

In order to understand a foods effect on the blood sugar, we need to know both the glycemic index and the glycemic load to calculate the glycemic load of a certain kind of food, divide the glycemic index by 100 and multiply by the grams of carbohydrate in the serving size.

They categorize glycemic load into high, medium and low. A high load is one of twenty and above, while the medium range is eleven to nineteen while the low range is ten to zero. Let us use the watermelon to illustrate.

Lets try getting the glycemic load of a one hundred and twenty gram watermelon, which has a glycemic index of seventy-two and available carbohydrates of six grams. So (72/100) x (6)=4.62 (low glycemic load).

The concepts of glycemic load and index emphasize the importance of the right food combinations, and having food that has a combination of all the food groups, rather than one with just refined carbohydrates.

The glycemic index on its own can be a useful way to make appropriate food choices and some prefer it over other methods such as counting carbs. So even though the glycemic index has its shortcomings, it continues to offer information on how to keep insulin resistance at bay.
